what an amazing night!!!

Obama Winning

Prop2 in CA passing, it's the biggest victory in history for animal rights thus far

Greyhound racing banned in MA

sad about the gay marriage ban :(

i am so extremely tired. i didn't go to bed til 2am, went to Union Square with my friend and there were hundreds of people there, the streets were filled with cars and trucks honking, people playing music, screaming, jumping around, giving strangers high fives, bag pipes being played and just celebrating..it was amazing. i don't think anyone has been this excited for a president ever!!! my neighbor said people were excited when jfk won but that it wasn't anything like this.

today my mom and i went to see Nigel Barker (of America's Next Top Model) photography exhibit at 401 projects in the west village. He worked with the Humane Society & went to Canada with a few other people to capture the baby seals just hours after they were born & then documented their slaughter. (for those who don't know millions of baby seals are killed each year in Canada for their fur) Anyways he(he gave an hour long tour) had some really sweet stories and talked about his experience. he said the seals were all about the people and kept coming over to them, he mentioned that when he was taking a photo of one of the seals another came up and was rubbing up against him. he didn't pet them because some people believe that if you pet a seal then it will be rejected by its mother because she'll smell the human on him. but he said he definitely could have if he wanted to cos they were so close to him. anyways it was really sweet. he didn't have any of the photos he took of dead seals on display because he wanted to document their beauty. afterwards there was a 45 minute video and they did have close ups of trails of blood & then there was some footage of them being slaughtered but it was taken from far away but you could see them dragging them in the snow..so sad :(

this one was so cute with the snow over its head, he had a caption under it about how it seemed like the seal had watched Top Model because he kept posing haha

anyways. i'm glad i went.

i wish i could stop coughing.

Oprah goes vegan [May. 22nd, 2008|10:50 am]
[music |Watching Six Feet Under Season 2]

(re-posted)
Oprah announced today that she’s going vegan for at least 21 days. She’s even acknowledged that evolving to “conscious eating” means more than just being conscious of yourself and your choices - but conscious of the animals whose bodies are milked dry, tortured and bled, and pulverized for gluttony. The good news about this is, of course, the far-reaching influence of her example.

(from her blog)

Week one:

"Wow, wow, wow! I never imagined meatless meals could be so satisfying. I had been focused on what I had to give up—sugar, gluten, alcohol, meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese. "What's left?" I thought. Apparently a lot. I can honestly say every meal was a surprise and a delight, beginning with breakfast—strawberry rhubarb wheat-free crepes." — Oprah

fucking grosssssssss [Dec. 23rd, 2006|07:06 pm]
[mood | nauseated]

i bought a luna bar today..as i was eating it i noticed there were LIVE WORMS inside, seriously there were quite a bit crawling around and i had already eaten half of the bar, i feel so fucking sick right now. i wanted to puke cos im pretty sure i swallowed some and it was just gross. ive never seen anything like that in my life. its 2 hours later now and i still feel really nauseous!!

i went back to the store i got it from and showed it to the woman and she looked like she was gonna puke, threw it out and asked if i wanted my $ back, i said yes and told her she should be aware of them in the future cos what if the whole batch is like that so she asked if i wanted to check so i took one and broke it in half a few times(she told me to) and i said this one looks better..and she put it in a bag and handed it to me i was like uhh well i still want my $ back but she was looking at me like "well i just gave you another luna bar for free" but uh i didnt want one, the flavor wasnt even that good, and shes the one who told me to check it, she should have given me my money AND a free one!

ughhh gross!!

im going to call the company & the department of health on tuesday

would you help researchers by testing out a medicine thats already on the market to help with certain diganoses but they think it can help for other things? its already fda approved but they want to test it with other conditions

would you test out a drug that's not on the market and not yet fda approved?

thoughts/comments would be appreciated. thanks

this is what i learned in class yesterday [Oct. 4th, 2006|11:18 am]
Poverty line for a family of 4 $19,971
Rent $8,328 a year
(most people use half their income on rent alone)
37 million americans live below the poverty line
43% live below 1/2 of the poverty line(so below 9,000 a year) (this is the highest # of ppl on record who have)
the median income has declined nationally
male median income declined by $774 in the past year
female median income declined by $427 in the past year
2005 median income in the US $46,326

Health Insurance
47 million people in the US have NO health insurance at all
59% of population today has employer sponsored health insurance despite increasing corporate profits

Income Inequality
more than 40% of total income goes to the top 10% of the population
corporate profits 14% of total income-highest its ever been & yet wages are decreasing

Federal minimum wage $5.50(started in 1997)

$10 should be the bare minimum in order for people not to live in poverty

Value of the min. wage is at the lowest its been since 1955

Since 1997 :
cost of living has risen by 26%
food by 23%
housing by 29%
medical care by 43%
child care by 52%
educational books and supply 61%

While the wage has not risen at all

In 1978 average CEO was paid 78x's as much as an average full time full year worker earning min wage
By 2005 average CEO was paid 820x's!!! as much as an average full time worker earning min wage

average CEO earns more money before lunch time on the very 1st day of work of the year than a min. wage worker makes all year

fucking depressing.

well just typed all that out so hope it interested at least some of you. gotta get ready and leave in less than a half hour

the U.S. House of Representatives passed the ban of horse slaughter in the US by a vote of 263-146. now the senate just has to pass it!! *crosses fingers*

definitely a step in the right direction! and if this is passed maybe the slaughter of other animals will be banned too!

contact your senates!! it will save 100,000 horses from being slaughtered in the US every year!!

and if you live in nyc next week:
